Don't Sink the "Sub!"

One nice relaxing morning last week I received a phone call from the Principal at Manti Elementary  (AKA "my MOM!)  In her very nicest, sweetest, and most desperate voice she asked  if I would substitute for a Kindergarten class.  School would be starting in 4 days.  The Kindergarten teacher had a baby and was taking 6 weeks maternity leave.  The Principal explained that she  had tried other regular substitutes but had been turned down.  So, as a last resort, she called me! :)   The exciting news was...I would be Alex's teacher!  We would get to go to school together for his first day of Kindergarten (plus 6 weeks!)...what more could a mother ask for?  After making a few phone calls to my wonderful sister-in-laws to see if they could help tend Lane, I agreed to the substituting task!  I also checked with Andy to make sure he was willing to step it up a notch in the mornings.  This would mean that the whole entire family would  have to be up, fed, beds made, dressed, hair combed, and out of the house by 8:00AM!  He simply said, "No problem!"
So, we are now 4 days into the school year!  So far, so good.  It has been fun for me to be back in my "teaching mode."  Kindergarten is perfect.  I only have to work for 3 hours a day -- I am home by noon.   Being in the classroom with the kids again reminds me why I went into Elementary Education.  I love the school atmosphere!  Thanks mom for calling me and giving me this opportunity.  You know I would do anything in this world to help you! And thanks to Colette and Billie for tending Lane... you are the best!
So, here I am with Alex...off to school.  I have my "teacher bag" full of surprises, graham crackers, a story book, and oh, where is my pillow?  There is still nap time in kindergarten, right?

This is our cousin Kevin (a big first grader!), Alex, and Madison all ready for their first day of school.  Notice that the 4th grader isn't much taller than the Kindergartner.  Maybe this will be the year she grows an inch or two!  :)

I took a moment on my first day of teaching to snap a photo of Alex and his friend Drake eating snack.  I knew the graham crackers and pretzels would come in handy.  My students had starting complaining of hunger after their first 15 minutes of school!

"My" class!

This is Madison and her friend Breanna -- holding up four fingers to represent big 4th graders.  Where has the time gone??  Isn't she just 5?
After all said and done, it was a wonderful first day of school.  I never got to use my pillow.  I guess "nap time" no longer exists in kindergarten.  Instead they want me to teach those kids how to read?  What??

Awesome!!! I bet you are so fun to have in Kindergarden. If you need any help with Lane at all, let me know! We'd love to have him play!

You are so organized. I don't know what I would do if I had to have the whole family out the door by 8. I know none of our beds would be made. We love having Lane here. Let's just hope that one day we can actually play at the church.

That is so awesome! My dream come true...to be able to spy on my kids at school but you can do it for real, and your mom is the principal! No wonder you live in Manti.

Oh Robyn... Kindergarten in August...ahhhhhhh! I know the chaos! However, I'm with you. Whenever I teach, I realize exactly why I went into Elem. Ed.
Sounds like a perfect little stint...maybe by week 6, those little rascals will actually know how to get into an organized line!
P.S... aren't you pregnant? By the looks of your picture..I'm not conviced! You look great!

Yes --- I asked Robyn to substitute. I went in to check on her ---- there were about 7 or 8 adults in that kindergarten ----- teacher assistants, pre-school assistants to help with transition plans, special education staff, etc. There were more adults than kids. Robyn was teaching away and had the kids with her. That took courage!!!! I chuckled and went on my way to harass someone else. I'm so happy and so all are those kindergarten students.
Thanks Robyn, from me and from all those moms. You are the best.

What the?!! Do you not know I would have gladly tended also? I would even drive to Manti to get my buddie Lane. I'll do anything for family... that is my motto. Hmmm something is messed up. I am such the outcast. But then I do live where the weird people are.

wow! good luck! I am scared to death to send Louk to kindergarten next year-- there are 29 students in each classroom this year.

How do you teach 29 little tiny kids?
